Important to know
Permit from GBAO (for the Pamir Highway)
A GBAO permit is mandatory for our entire itinerary after Dushanbe. It's included in the tour price and can be arranged in advance. The most convenient way is to add the GBAO permit option (+20 USD) when applying for your e-Visa. If you have a visa-free entry, we can help you obtain the permit through your tour operator or in Dushanbe upon arrival.
Currency and money exchange
- The best currency for travel is US dollars (USD). Bring new, clean, unwrinkled bills (especially small denominations: $1, $5, $10, $20, and $50). Old or damaged bills are often rejected.
- Euros are also accepted, but the exchange rate is less favorable.
- Russian rubles can be exchanged, but dollars are much more convenient and profitable.
Where is the best place to exchange money:
- The best rates are available at official exchange offices and banks in Dushanbe (preferably in the city center, not at the airport).
- In Khorog there are also several reliable exchange offices with acceptable rates.
- Further along the route (Kalai Khumb, Langar, Yashilkul, etc.), there are virtually no exchange offices or ATMs. Therefore, it is recommended to exchange a sufficient amount of currency in Dushanbe immediately upon arrival.
Recommendation: Change money in small amounts as needed. The local currency is the Tajik somoni (TJS). Dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, but paying in somoni is cheaper and more convenient. Exchanging somoni back into dollars upon departure is usually unprofitable.
