Getting to know the Pamir-Alai is an 11-day trip travel around Kyrgyzstan, through the little-known corners of the Pamir-Alay. The route begins and ends in Osh and includes crossing two high passes—Sary-Mogol (4,306 m) and Dzhiptyk (4,185 m)—an exploration of the red cliffs of the Three Dragons Gorge, the turquoise lake system of Tulpar-Köl, and an exit to the base camp of Lenin Peak (3,600 m) with an ascent to Puteshestvennikov Pass (4,150 m), from where a panoramic view opens onto the snow-capped wall of Lenin Peak, 7,134 m high.
The total length of the hiking sections is approximately 125 km, with an elevation gain of up to 4,306 m. The trek passes through alpine meadows, high-mountain plateaus, and valleys with pastures where yaks, sheep, and horses are found. Overnight stays alternate: three nights in a hotel in Osh, one in a guesthouse in Sary-Mogol, six in yurt camps, and one in rooms at the Pamir International Mountaineering Camp.
Main impressions

Arrival in Osh. City tour
Arrive in Osh, meet at the airport, and transfer to a 3-star hotel. After resting and breakfast, we set out to explore the city. We climb the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain right in the center of Osh: here, a huge flag flutters, the historic 16th-century "House of Babur" mosque stands, and a cave museum inside the rock. Then, we immerse ourselves in the bustle and aromas of the Osh bazaar, sampling local flatbreads, samsa, fresh fruit, and Kyrgyz tea. In the evening, we return to the hotel with a hot shower and Wi-Fi.

Important to know
Equipment (minimum recommended)
List of necessary equipment:
- Bring both warm and light clothing. It can be quite warm during the day, but at night and during rain, the temperature can drop to near freezing. Therefore, a fleece jacket will come in handy during the day, and a warm down jacket in the evening and at night.;
- Be sure to bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and pants. Passes are often windy, and this gear will help keep you warm and protect you from the elements.;
- Choose quality trekking shoes. Stiff ankle support is not essential, but will be helpful when ascending and descending steep sections of the trail;
- A small backpack is needed for a camera, water, sunscreen, snacks and spare clothes;
- To transport personal belongings on a horse, use a duffel bag or travel bag;
- Don't forget sun protection. Sun rays are especially intense in the mountains, so bring sunglasses, sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and a cap or hat;

- Take a personal first aid kit with medications for blisters, upset stomach and other minor health problems;

- A headlamp is useful for moving around the camp at night;
- A warm sleeping bag is essential. Yurts and guesthouses usually provide blankets.
Luggage up to 10 kg is transported by horses, the rest is left in Osh.
Will you need insurance?
Yes, you will need insurance. Be sure to purchase travel insurance that covers active recreation (trekking at altitudes up to 4,500 m) and helicopter evacuation—in remote areas, assistance may require air evacuation.
How difficult is the track and is any special training required?
Moderate to above-average difficulty: hikes up to 9 hours, elevation gain up to 1,300 m per day, maximum elevation 4,306 m. There is no technical mountaineering, but good physical fitness and mountain walking experience are required. Acclimatization begins on the third day to help the body adapt to the altitude.
What if I can't handle the load one day?
A guide is always with the group and can adjust the pace or arrange rest periods. Most camps offer the option of staying in a yurt while the group hikes to the pass (with an escort). However, the program does not allow for a complete trek on certain days—it's best to assess your abilities beforehand.
What is the situation with hygiene and showers in the yurts?
The yurt camps (6 nights) have no hot showers or electricity—only outdoor toilets and basins with warm water for washing. Showers and Wi-Fi are available in Osh (3 nights), Sary-Mogol (lunches and 1 night), and Lenin Peak Base Camp (1 night). These are typical conditions for an authentic trek in the Alay Mountains.
Is it possible to drink water from rivers and springs along the route?
Spring water is clean in most places, but it is recommended to purify it with tablets, a filter, or boil it—this is standard advice for the highlands of Kyrgyzstan. Bottled drinking water can be purchased in Osh and Sary-Mogol.
Is the tour suitable for vegetarians or people with allergies?
Yes, guesthouses and yurt camps can prepare vegetarian and vegan dishes (meat-free, with vegetables, potatoes, rice, bread, sour cream, and jams). Allergies are also taken into account—be sure to inform your guide in advance or when booking.
How much does the luggage carried by horses weigh, and what should you take in your backpack?
Horses carry up to 10 kg of personal belongings per person (clothing, sleeping bag, equipment). Pack your daypack with only the essentials: water, snacks, sunscreen, a warm jacket, a camera, and a first aid kit. Leave the rest of your luggage at your hotel in Osh.
Is there mobile phone coverage and internet in the mountains?
Osh and Sary-Mogol have stable internet and Wi-Fi. Yurt camps and mountain passes usually have no service (only a satellite phone carried by the guide for emergencies). Wi-Fi works at Lenin Peak Base Camp.
What is the weather like on the passes in July–September?
Daytime temperatures will be +20–25°C in the valleys, cooler at the passes (+10–15°C), and at night +5…+15°C, with possible wind and occasional rain. Above 4,000 m, it can be cold and windy—be sure to bring a down jacket, hat, and gloves.
