Celebrating New Year by a warm sea is a great idea, but it should be planned in advance: demand is highest over the holidays, and there are almost no last-minute deals. Here is where to go and what to keep in mind.

UAE — no visa and close by

In December the water is about +22…+25 °C; days are warm but not hot. No visa is needed, and the flight takes about 4 hours. Dubai celebrates New Year with the famous fireworks at Burj Khalifa — it is best to book places on the waterfront and in restaurants with a view in advance.

Egypt — Sharm El Sheikh

The water in December is about +24 °C, days are +18…+25 °C, and nights are cool — down to +10…+13 °C. A direct flight takes about 6 hours, with visa-free entry on the Sinai stamp for up to 14 days.

Vietnam — Phu Quoc

December is the start of the dry season on the island, hot and sunny. If you fly in directly, you can stay visa-free for up to 30 days. Nha Trang is not the best choice for New Year: in December it is still the transition season after the rains.

Thailand — Phuket

Dry season, warm sea. But you need an e-visa — it is issued online in advance, so it is best to decide on a New Year trip to Thailand back in November.

Maldives

December in the Maldives is a transition month before the driest season (January–March). The visa is free, on arrival. This is the most expensive option, and prices are especially high over the holidays.

When to book

Dates around New Year are the most in demand: flights and good hotels sell out first. For a holiday trip it is best to decide in November — especially if you need a visa (Thailand, Vietnam outside Phu Quoc).

In short

  • No visa: UAE, Egypt (Sharm), Phu Quoc (with a direct flight).
  • Visa in advance: Phuket.
  • Most expensive: the Maldives.
  • Book in November — availability is lowest over the holidays.
