Georgia and Baku in Winter: Is It Worth Going from Tashkent?
Tbilisi and Baku are nearby and visa-free, but in winter they're city breaks, not beach trips. Weather, flights from Tashkent and the mandatory insurance for Georgia.
In this article
Georgia and Azerbaijan are the closest destinations from Tashkent: about a three-hour flight, no visa required. In winter it's not a beach vacation but a trip for the cities, the food and the atmosphere. Here's what to expect.
Georgia in Winter
In winter, people head to Tbilisi: walks through the Old Town and Narikala Fortress, and trips to ancient Mtskheta, Sighnaghi and the wine region of Kakheti. Up in the mountains, the ski resorts are open — the best known is Gudauri.
Batumi in winter isn't for the beach: the air is about 5–10 °C, the sea 10–14 °C, and it rains often. For a beach trip to Batumi, go between July and September.
Georgia Visa and Insurance
- Uzbek citizens don't need a visa.
- Since January 1, 2026, medical insurance with at least $30,000 in coverage is mandatory — in English or Georgian, on paper or electronic. It's checked at entry.
- Without a policy, the fine is 300 lari, rising to 900 lari if it isn't paid within a month.
- Insurance is already included in our tours.
How to Fly to Tbilisi
Direct flights to Tbilisi are operated by Uzbekistan Airways (about 3 h 20 min), Centrum Air (from late October, on Mondays and Fridays) and Air Samarkand (on Wednesdays and Saturdays, through January 23). There are no direct flights to Batumi or Kutaisi in winter — travelers connect through Tbilisi.

Baku in Winter
In December, Baku sees daytime temperatures of about 8–12 °C and often strong winds — a warm jacket is a must. Winter visitors come to stroll the Old Town and the Boulevard, see the Flame Towers and sample Azerbaijani cuisine. For the Caspian beaches, come in summer; the best time for the city is May and the second half of September.
Baku Visa and Flights
- Visa-free for up to 90 days; no registration needed for the first 15 days.
- Direct flights: AZAL, Uzbekistan Airways, Centrum Air and FlyOne Asia, about 3 hours.
- The currency is the manat (about 1.70 to the dollar). Azerbaijan is 1 hour behind Tashkent.
