The Pamir Highway: a road across the “Roof of the World”
One of the highest roads on the planet: a pass at 4,655 meters, the Wakhan Valley with views of the Hindu Kush, and Lake Karakul. What to know before you go.
In this article
The Pamir Highway is called one of the most beautiful and rugged roads in the world. It crosses the high Pamirs, and most of the route lies above three kilometers. This journey isn't about comfort — it's about the feeling of being at the edge of the earth.
What Kind of Road It Is
The highway links Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, running from Khorog to Osh. It was built back in the 1930s and is still the main road through the Pamirs. The asphalt is good in places and missing entirely in others, so people drive it in 4x4s.
What to See Along the Way
- Wakhan Valley. The road follows the Panj River, with Afghanistan and the snow-white peaks of the Hindu Kush on the opposite bank. Along the way: ancient fortresses, Buddhist stupas and hot springs.
- Murghab. A high-mountain village at about 3,600 meters — one of the highest in the former USSR.
- Ak-Baital Pass. The highest point of the highway — 4,655 meters above sea level.
- Lake Karakul. A vast lake at about 3,900 meters that, according to one theory, formed in a meteorite impact crater.

When to go
The season runs from June to September. The rest of the year, passes can be closed by snow, and night frosts drop below −20 °C. Even in summer, nights in Murghab can hover around freezing — warm clothes are a must.
What You Need to Know
Traveling in Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region requires a special permit — the GBAO permit. It's arranged in advance, together with your visa or separately.
- You gain altitude gradually, so altitude sickness is less common here than on climbs, but a mild headache during the first nights is perfectly normal.
- Cell service and ATMs are far from everywhere. It's best to bring cash with you.
- You'll stay in homestays with local families — an experience in itself: Pamiris are incredibly hospitable.
How Much Time to Allow
To drive the highway without rushing and see the highlights, you need 7–10 days. You can do it faster, but then you'll spend most of the trip in the car.
