Before traveling abroad, many people have the same question: how will I pay when I get there? We break down which cards work overseas, how much cash you can bring and which currency you'll need in popular destinations.

How Much Cash You Can Take Out

You can take up to 100 million sum (about $8,450) out of Uzbekistan without a declaration. If you carry more, you must declare the entire amount, not just the excess. A $10,000 threshold is only being planned — the current rule still applies.

Which Cards Work Abroad

Regular Humo and Uzcard cards only work inside Uzbekistan. For travel, you need cards issued on an international payment network:

  • Humo-Visa, Humo-Mastercard;
  • Uzcard-Mastercard, Uzcard-UnionPay;
  • regular Visa and Mastercard cards from Uzbek banks.

There's also news for 2026: Humo has launched QR-code payments abroad via Alipay+ right in the banking app — according to the company, in China and more than 50 other countries, including the UAE. And Agrobank issues a UnionPay-Humo card that works wherever UnionPay is accepted.

Tip: before your trip, check with your bank whether your card works in your destination and what the cash withdrawal fee is. The safest bet is to bring two cards on different networks and a few dollars in cash.

Which Currency to Bring

  • Egypt — the local currency is the Egyptian pound, but visa and registration fees are paid in dollars. Bring dollars.
  • UAE — the dirham, which is pegged to the dollar. Dollars are exchanged without any trouble.
  • Thailand — the Thai baht; dollars can be changed at exchange offices.
  • Vietnam — the Vietnamese dong.
  • Maldives — at resorts, prices and payments are in dollars, and Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Rufiyaa is mainly needed on local islands.
  • Georgia — the lari. Azerbaijan — the manat (about 1.70 to the dollar).

Fees Worth Knowing About in Advance

  • Dubai — the hotel tourism fee: 7 to 20 dirhams per room per night.
  • Maldives — Green Tax: $12 per night at a resort and $6 at a guesthouse on a local island, paid on site.
  • Egypt — a visa for Hurghada and Cairo costs $30.

In short

  • Up to 100 million sum in cash without a declaration.
  • Cards on Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay work abroad; regular Humo and Uzcard don't.
  • Check your card with your bank before the trip and bring some dollars.
