The Maldives is a dream destination for many travelers. You can fly there nonstop from Tashkent, and the visa is free. Here's when to go, what you need at the border and how to make your vacation more affordable.

Flight

Centrum Air operates a direct flight from Tashkent to Malé, taking about 6.5 hours. Other options involve a connection, for example through Dubai.

When to go

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, the driest period is January through March. December and April are transition months, and mid-May through November is the wet season with rain. Temperatures stay around 25–32 °C year-round. The south of the country gets more rain than the north.

Visa and Documents

A tourist visa is issued free of charge on arrival. At the border you'll need:

  • a passport valid for at least one month;
  • a return ticket;
  • a paid hotel reservation;
  • sufficient funds for the trip;
  • a Traveller Declaration on the IMUGA portal — completed no earlier than 96 hours before arrival for each traveler, including children. We'll help you fill it out.

Local Taxes

The Maldives charges a Green Tax: $12 per person per night at a resort and $6 at a guesthouse on a local island. Children under 2 are exempt. Departure fees are usually already included in the airfare.

How to Save

  • Local islands instead of a resort. Guesthouses cost less than hotels, and the Green Tax there is half as much.
  • Meals. Everything at resorts is expensive, so it's better value to book a rate with meals included rather than paying separately.
  • Dates. The New Year holidays are the most expensive time. If your dates are flexible, compare different weeks.

Money and Time

  • Resort prices are in dollars, and Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Maldivian rufiyaa is mainly needed on local islands.
  • There's no time difference with Tashkent.

In short

  • A direct flight from Tashkent takes about 6.5 hours.
  • The best season is January–March.
  • The visa is free; an IMUGA declaration is required within 96 hours of arrival.
  • Green Tax: $12 per night at a resort, $6 at a guesthouse.
